Afghanistan’s maternal health situation worries WHO

Shafaqna Pakistan: The World Health Organization (WHO) has once again raised concerns over maternal health risks in Afghanistan.

In a statement, the organisation said that although Afghanistan has made progress in the health sector in recent years—particularly in maternal and newborn care—serious risks to mothers still remain.

According to the WHO, antenatal care coverage has increased from 31% to 76%, while the rate of skilled birth attendance has improved from 24% to 67%. Despite these gains, many women continue to face major health challenges during pregnancy and childbirth.
