Shafaqna Pakistan: Former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who is living in exile in India and has been sentenced to death in Bangladesh, told Reuters that she and senior leaders of the banned Awami League plan to return around December and surrender to the authorities.
Hasina, the country’s longest-serving leader, said she and her party colleagues intend to voluntarily return to Bangladesh, which they fled two years ago, and appear before the courts, putting the country’s treatment of its most prominent political opposition figure to the test.
“They may arrest me when I return, they may even kill me,” the 78-year-old said during a nearly hour-long telephone interview with Reuters that began late Thursday and continued into Friday.
“Still, I have to go,” she said. “My party leaders and workers are being subjected to tremendous repression. If death comes, I want it to come on my own soil, where my parents are buried and where their blood was shed.”
