Shafaqna Pakistan: At least 27 people were killed in a fire at a popular pub in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, late on Sunday, making it one of the country’s deadliest nightclub incidents in recent years, officials said.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the scene, said authorities had recovered 27 bodies while the injured were being taken to nearby hospitals. The blaze broke out at around 11:57 p.m. local time on Sunday.
Citing accounts from survivors, the prime minister said the venue in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district quickly filled with thick smoke after the fire erupted. Many patrons rushed towards the rear of the building near the bathrooms in an attempt to escape, but the pub reportedly had no emergency fire exits.
Suriyachai Rawiwan, director of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said 63 people injured in the fire had been admitted to hospitals for treatment.
“The number of deaths has stabilised at 27,” he told Reuters.
By the time the rescue workers arrived at the scene of the accident, the fire that witnesses said ignited at the front of the venue’s stage had already burned through the area, according to Suriyachai.
“We have to wait for the police to investigate,” he added.
