Many analysts believed that the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) had engineered the attack on the Parliament to defame Pakistan, and consequently give the US an opportunity to turn the heat on the mujahideen in Kashmir who are waging a legitimate struggle against Indian occupation. The then Pakistan’s information secretary had stated that it was insiders’ job, as no outsider could reach the most protected area. India has been accused of false flag operations to implicate Pakistan.
On July 14, 2013 a former Under Secretary of India’s Ministry of Home Affairs R.V.S. Mani submitted a declaration to the country’s highest court, the Supreme Court of India, that both the 2001 terrorist attack on Indian Parliament and 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack were staged. Many describe such operations asclassic false flag operations, deliberately initiated by Indian intelligence agencies aimed at achieving certain specific objectives.
Both these incidents, which India alleged that Pakistan was responsible of, had almost led the two nuclear armed neighbors to the brink of a major regional conflict, which could have resulted in a nuclear war. There is a perception that India could implode from inside, as the world’s so-called biggest democracy is racked by separatist and communal violence. However it wasfirst time that such an attack was launched on the heavily guarded parliamentary complex. Earlier, Sikh separatists hadassassinated prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1984. And a Tamil suicide bomber killed her son Rajiv Gandhi, who also served as a prime minister in 1991. It is therefore wrong to say that Pakistan is involved in every terrorist act in India. Now let us go into the details of the attack on the Indian Parliament after three months of 9/11 events.
According to reports, on 13th December 2001, five armed men drove through the gates of the Indian parliament in a car fitted with a bomb. When challenged they jumped out of the car and opened fire, killing eight security personnel and a gardener. In the exchange of fire that followed, all five attackers were killed. L.K. Advani, then home minister in the BJP government hadsaid they looked like Pakistanis. Within 24 hours, the Delhi Police Special Cell (notorious for its fake “encounter” killings, whereby suspected terrorists are targeted in extrajudicial attacks) claimed it had cracked the case. On 15 December it arrested, what they called, the “mastermind”, Professor S.A.R. Geelani, in Delhi, and Showkat Guru and his cousin Afzal Guru in Srinagar, Kashmir. Subsequently, they arrested Afsan Guru, Showkat’swife, but the high court acquitted them and the supreme courtupheld the acquittal.
But in its 5th August 2005 judgment, the court gave Afzal Guru three life sentences and a double death sentence. The two most incriminating pieces of evidence against Guru were a cell phone and a laptop, which were not sealed as evidence as required to be. During the trial it emerged that the hard disk of the laptop had been accessed after the arrest. It only contained the fake home ministry passes and the fake identity cards that the terrorists used to access parliament – and a Zee TV video clip of parliament house. This means that laptop was tampered to get Afzal Guru indicted. The police witness said he sold the crucialsim that connected all the accused in the case to one another to Guru on 4 December 2001. But the prosecution’s own call records showed the sim was actually operational from 6 November 2001.
On 10th February 2013, Arundhati Roy wrote an article in “the Guardian” titled ‘The hanging of Afzal Guru is a stain on India’s democracy’, giving details of attack on the parliament on 13th December 2011. She wrote that despite gaping holes in the case against Afzal Guru, all India’s institutions played a part in putting a Kashmiri ‘terrorist’ to death. Hours after the attack the next morning, India’s Minister of Home Affairs L.K. Advanihad claimed” “We have received some clues about yesterday’s incident, which shows that a neighbouring country, and some terrorist organizations active there are behind it.” This was an indirect reference to Pakistan’s involvement. Pakistan’s Ambassador to India was called to India’s Ministry of External Affairs the same day, and a strong demarche was launched. Within days, India ordered the biggest mobilization of its armed forces since 1971, calling it Operation Parakaram. Pakistan also moved troops to the front positions, and both armies stood eyeball to eyeball for several months.
There are many more such examples where state-run Indian intelligence agencies routinely conduct false flag operations, which result in numerous deaths and injuries. However, surprisingly the Indian media does not highlight such acts; it rather propagates the government version. However, involvement in acts of terrorism by a senior Indian Military Intelligence officer Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Purohit has exposed the Indian government. Purohit was involved in many acts of terrorism inside India, which resulted in numerous deaths of Pakistani as well as Indian citizens. The acts perpetrated through his support were deliberately and purposely portrayed as the job of Indian Muslim terrorist groups. Nevertheless, his statements in the Indian courts clearly indicated that he kept his senior officers in the Military Intelligence Branch at Indian Army Headquarters duly informed about all his actions.
This is a clear evidence of Indian Military Intelligence and Indian Army hierarchy’s involvement in planning and execution of such state sponsored acts of terrorism. As stated above, the former Under Secretary of the India’s Ministry of Home Affairs has also stated in front of India’s highest court, the Supreme Court of India that such actions are also a routine in other state intelligence agencies as well. Such false flag operations by Indian state-run intelligence agencies raise many serious concerns. Probably, emboldened by the perception that whatever India says against Pakistan with regard to acts of terrorism, the world perceives it to be true. India does not even hesitate to perpetrate such acts of state terrorism against its own people. They use these acts as the veritable arm and extension of India’s foreign policy objectives. However, there is a redeeming feature that the world has started understanding the machinations of Indian leadership.
