Shafaqna Pakistan: US President Donald Trump ordered the military not to carry out strikes on Iran on Friday as Oman-mediated negotiations in Tehran showed progress towards a possible agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Axios reported on Saturday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The decision ended a 13-day period of daily US strikes. According to the report, Trump had approved military strike plans each afternoon over the previous two weeks but withheld authorisation for a similar operation on Friday, instructing the military to stand down instead.
Two regional sources told Axios that talks between Iran and Oman had advanced and that an agreement could be reached over the weekend. Any proposed deal, however, would still require Trump’s approval.
The US military continues to prepare options for a possible return to major combat operations, but Trump has not ordered it to move in that direction, the report said, adding that strikes could resume at relatively short notice.
