Shafaqna Pakistan: Iran on Monday described the recently signed defence pact between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan as evidence of a shifting regional perception of the United States, while saying Tehran had no reason to believe the agreement was directed against it.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the countries of the region had recognised that security could not be treated as a commodity obtained from external powers, in an apparent reference to the United States, which is allied with all three signatories.
Speaking at a weekly press briefing, Baqaei said Iran was not concerned that the new security arrangement between Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia was aimed at Tehran.
The comments came days after the three countries signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, pledging to strengthen collective security and defence cooperation.
Baghaei said the pact showed a shift in regional countries’ approach to security, with greater reliance on their own capabilities rather than outside powers.
“Any plan that is based on the geopolitical and historical realities of the region, is comprehensive and inclusive, and correctly identifies the enemy and the threat, has a chance of helping to strengthen security and prevent instability and abuses by the Zionist enemy and its allies,” he added, referring to Israel.
