Pakistan envoy calls India’s stance on Indus treaty misleading

Shafaqna Pakistan: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Rizwan Saeed Sheikh has accused India of seeking to distort the structure and history of the Indus Waters Treaty, stressing that the agreement remains in force.

In an article published in a US journal, Sheikh said both Pakistan and India were legally bound to comply with the treaty and that it contained no provision allowing either party to suspend the agreement unilaterally.

“The Indus Waters Treaty is still in force and applicable to both parties,” Sheikh wrote, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to honouring and implementing the agreement.

The Pakistani envoy also warned that India’s unilateral actions threatened peace and security in South Asia, but did not provide further details.

The Indus Waters Treaty, signed by India and Pakistan in 1960 with World Bank involvement, governs the sharing of waters from the Indus river system between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
