Shafaqna Pakistan: Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti has termed the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s unanimous ruling on the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) a significant legal and diplomatic victory for Pakistan.
In a statement, Bugti said the Hague-based court had reaffirmed the continued validity of the Indus Waters Treaty and established that India remained bound by its obligations under the agreement.
He described the ruling as an important step towards protecting Pakistan’s longstanding rights over its water resources.
The chief minister said the IWT held significance beyond being a bilateral pact, describing it as a key international legal framework directly connected to Pakistan’s water security and national interests.
He said the unanimous decision strengthened Pakistan’s position that all parties to international agreements were responsible for honouring their commitments.
Bugti added that the ruling further reinforced the principles of respect for international treaties, the supremacy of international law and adherence to agreements reached between states.
He said Pakistan would continue using constitutional, legal and diplomatic means to protect its water rights.
The chief minister termed the arbitration ruling an endorsement of Pakistan’s longstanding position and said it highlighted the importance of resolving water-related disputes in accordance with international law and established agreements.
He further said the reaffirmation of the treaty’s legal status was a significant development for Pakistan and underscored the importance of international legal principles in addressing future water disputes in the region.
