Three new mpox cases detected as disease re-emerges

Shafaqna Pakistan: Mpox has resurfaced in Sindh with three newly confirmed cases, including a father and his daughter, taking the province’s confirmed tally to 40.

Hospital sources at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital in NIPA said PCR tests confirmed the virus in three patients currently receiving treatment. Authorities are also awaiting test results for another suspected case.

Two of the newly confirmed patients, a father and daughter, are from interior Sindh, while the third is a 46-year-old man from Karachi’s Federal B Area.

Officials said the overall situation would become clearer once the suspected patient’s test results are received. Of the 40 confirmed cases in Sindh so far, 13 have been reported in Karachi.

Health experts said Mpox is a viral disease caused by a virus from the same family as the smallpox virus. The prominent symptoms include rash, painful or itchy lesions, fever, headache, body aches and fatigue.

In some patients, lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin may also swell. The Mpox rash can appear on different parts of the body, including the face, hands, feet, mouth and throat.

Some patients may not show any clear symptoms before the lesions appear. It can take up to 21 days for symptoms to appear after exposure to the virus.
