Electricity tariff hiked by Rs2.06 per unit, adding Rs45bn burden on consumers

Shafaqna Pakistan: Electricity consumers across Pakistan will face higher bills after the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved an increase in power tariffs under monthly and quarterly adjustments.

According to a NEPRA notification, electricity rates have been raised by Rs2.06 per unit under the monthly fuel price adjustment. The increase will be reflected in consumers’ September bills based on the July fuel adjustment.

The July adjustment is expected to impose an additional burden of around Rs33 billion on electricity consumers nationwide.

Separately, NEPRA has also decided to increase electricity charges by 52 paisas per unit under the quarterly tariff adjustment.

The regulator has forwarded its decision regarding the quarterly adjustment for April to June 2026 to the federal government.

The quarterly adjustment will remain applicable from September to November 2026 and is expected to impose an additional Rs12.67 billion burden on consumers.

Importantly, the quarterly adjustment will also apply to K-Electric consumers, extending its impact to electricity users in Karachi.

Taken together, the two adjustments represent an additional burden of approximately Rs45.67 billion on electricity consumers, although their billing mechanisms and applicable periods differ.

The latest tariff adjustments come as households and businesses continue to face pressure from elevated energy and other living costs.
