Shafaqna Pakistan:- The book “The Sun of the West” (Khurshid‑e Maghrib in Persian) written by the late Allama Mohammad Reza Hakimi explores issues related to the Islamic belief in the occultation of Imam Mahdi (AJ), the concept of awaiting him, and the associated religious duties. The title is derived from narrations about the rising of the sun from the west as a major sign before the Day of Judgment, a topic discussed in Shia sources. Shafaqna English selected some parts of the book and translated to English.
The Mahdi (AJ) in the Quran
It becomes clear that the topics of the Mahdi (AJ), expectation, and advent are interwoven throughout the books and sources of Islamic sects. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself taught it, and Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) and other Imams frequently spoke about it, elaborating on the characteristics of the awaited one, his advent, and the preparedness of the followers. Scholars and great figures of the Islamic sects, throughout Islamic history and across the world, have written entire chapters and books on this matter.
Thus, it is impossible that a topic of such significance, taught by the Prophet and extensively discussed by Ali (AS) and other Imams, would not have Qur’anic roots. There are indeed several verses related to this.
The Quran discusses events of the future, the End of Times, the establishment of good and the rule of the righteous—sometimes indirectly, sometimes explicitly. Islamic commentators, based on hadiths and exegesis, have interpreted these verses as referring to the Mahdi (AJ) and the final appearance at the End of Times.
Other verses in the Qur’an point explicitly to the presence and authority of the Mahdi (AJ), which will be discussed in the next chapter.
Here are ten verses concerning the Mahdi (AJ), the End of Times, the appearance of the “Righteous Dawn,” and the “Generous State”:
Verse One
“And We wrote in the Psalms, after the Reminder, that My righteous servants shall inherit the earth.” (Quran 21:105)
From the Psalms of David (AS), it is written that those righteous servants will inherit the earth. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (AS) said:
“These worthy people who inherit the earth are the companions of the Mahdi (AJ) at the End of Times.”
Sheikh al-Tabarsi, citing this hadith, states:
“When the duration of the world is complete, God will prolong that single day until a righteous man from my Ahl al-Bayt rises and fills the world with justice, as it had been filled with oppression.”
Imam Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Husayn Bayhaqi in his al-Ba‘th wa al-Nushur collected many narrations on this matter. His student, Abu al-Hasan Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad, transmitted them to us in 518 AH.
In Tafsir Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding this verse:
“We wrote in the Psalms… all heavenly books are considered ‘Reminders.’ ‘My righteous servants shall inherit the earth’ refers to the Mahdi (AJ) and his companions.”
This verse in the Psalms refers to great events and trials, praise and glorification of God, and prayers—foreshadowing the advent of the Mahdi (AJ).
