Shafaqna Pakistan: Goods transporters have announced a further 5% hike in freight charges in response to the recent surge in petroleum product prices.
All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance President Malik Shehzad Awan said diesel had become Rs20 per litre more expensive while petrol prices had risen by Rs24 over the past four days. He added that fuel prices had already been increased by as much as Rs23 per litre between August 20 and September 7.
Awan criticised the government’s policy of revising petroleum prices on a daily basis, calling it unacceptable for the transport sector. He recalled that during the nationwide strike from August 8 to 17, the petroleum minister had assured transporters that fuel prices would not be adjusted on a daily basis.
Malik Shehzad Awan said transporters had postponed their nationwide strike for 40 days on the assurances given by the federal and provincial governments.
He warned that if the agreements reached by the government were not implemented, transporters across Pakistan would launch another nationwide strike.
He said the federal and provincial governments had sought 40 days to resolve the issues, with the deadline set to expire next week.
