Shafaqna Pakistan: India’s women’s cricket team courted controversy on Sunday during the Women’s Asia Cup final after the players declined to receive the championship trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi at the post-match presentation.
Naqvi, who attended the final as the chief guest, was scheduled to present the trophy following India’s victory over defending champions Sri Lanka. However, the Indian players chose not to collect the title from the ACC president.
The episode bears resemblance to a similar incident involving India’s men’s cricket team last year, when its players also declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi during the presentation ceremony.
On the field, however, India produced a dominant performance to defeat Sri Lanka by 72 runs and claim the Women’s Asia Cup title for a record eighth time.
Batting first, India posted 183 runs to set Sri Lanka a target of 184. The defending champions struggled during their chase and were eventually bowled out for 111.
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu top-scored with 36 runs, while Nilakshi de Silva contributed 22. The rest of the Sri Lankan batting lineup failed to mount a serious challenge as India’s bowlers maintained control throughout the innings.
The victory secured another continental title for India, while the trophy presentation became the focus of attention after the Indian team’s decision not to receive the award from the ACC president.
