SHAFAQNA PAKISTAN (Shia News Agency)
Almost all the political parties of Pakistan have been nurtured in the nursery of Military therefore they have all the habits of dictatorship and autocracy. In 1960 and 1980 the two dictators Ayub Khan and Zia ul Haq discarded democracy and held local government polls on non party basis to choose such leaders that could help them to further their rule. Now the PML-N also seems to follow the footsteps of its military father as CM Punjab and Federal Government was all set to hold non-party Local Government polls in the province till cold water was poured on the plan by a Lahore High Court ruling in favour of party-based elections. Though PML-N claims to be Democratic Party yet it has failed to understand that there are no elections in democracy without a party. One may accept that PML-N is doing this because of the fear of popularity of PTI but it is against the spirit of democracy. Also by introducing a non-democratic measure the PML-N deviated from the Charter of Democracy it had signed with the PPP. The Charter explicitly requires Local Government elections to be held on “party basis through provincial election commissions in respective provinces”. Now PML-N has two options whether to hold these elections on party basis or remove the tag of a democratic party.
