The sufferings of internally displaced people seem over as Pakistan army has given a green signal to North Waziristan IDPs to return to their country. When Operation Zarb.e.Azb was launched it was expected that this operation will stretch to several months rather years however it was just in 9 months that military has given a green signal to IDPs to back to their land. Indeed it is very positive development and a welcoming step but there are several questions yet to be answered.
In the latest case of the military requiring some North Waziristan tribes to pledge, among other things, to keep out militants from their areas before IDPs are allowed to return home, what is particularly disturbing is that the military, via the Fata administrative apparatus, is effectively seeking to return to the pre-insurgency status quo of the FCR, collective punishment and the jirga system. What will be solution of this issue? Similarly the displacement was huge as expected by the government agencies as only 24000 families only belong to Miranshah and homes of most of the families have been destroyed. For the damaged houses, the federal government plans to pay Rs 400,000 each to the tribesmen whose houses were completely destroyed, and Rs 160,000 to those whose houses were damaged partially, he said. Besides that, he added, each repatriated family will get Rs 25,000 for transportation, and food and essentials for at least six months. It is good initiative but the most important thing is the security of the IDPs. How government will ensure the security of the returning IDPs. During South Waziristan operation and during their return they faced severe security problem and the most important thing is that Government should also ensure the changes of minds and heart in the area so that people could not be radicalized in future.
