Saudia and Iran after making Pakistan a proxy ground for their interests have now shifted to Yemen. Both the countries want to establish their hegemony in the region. Earlier both are also fighting a proxy war in Syria. This rivalry between two major states has left Muslim Ummah in a shamble. Now Saudia wants Pakistan to assist her in countering Iran in Yemen, who is trying to control Yemen through Shiite Houthis. The Saudi King had already met most of the Gulf rulers besides holding separate meetings with the Egyptian and Turkish presidents. There was a perception that the king wanted to enlist the support of all these countries against Iran and for jointly dealing with internal turmoil in the Gulf. The Saudi government has now involved a number of countries in its proxy war in Yemen. According to Saudi officials, ten Muslim countries have already joined hands with the kingdom.
It seems that Pakistan’s premier Mian Nawaz Sharif who is indebted to Saudi monarchs was willing to send troops and assist Saudi through sending warships has stepped back after military’s immense pressure. It is very wise decision by military top brass as Pakistan itself is engaged on several fronts and most importantly Pakistan should build its image is a Muslim country that has to unite Muslim Ummah and not the one who further deepen the divide.
