Poll is going in Nigeria today in a closely fought election between Jonathan Goodluck and Muhammadu Buhari. It is probably fair to say that right now poorer voters do not feel they are on the lift going up. Growth has not trickled down to them as much as it should, at least in terms of incomes although their access to clean water, medical help and education may have improved. The newly elected candidate would certainly face numerous challenges and top among them are corruption and furious militant group Boko Haram. Corruption in the military and other security agencies is rooted in the government’s uniquely strange and ambiguous understanding of the concept of security. “Security matters are highly sensitive”, is a common cliche in such circles, entrenching the idea that these matters need not be subject to public scrutiny. The failure of the state security agencies – the military, police, secret police – to confront this violence is sometimes attributed to incapacity. But many say deep corruption prevents the military from containing the insurgencies.
The other major Challenge is terrorist group Boko Haram that has started a wave of bombing across the country. It also kidnapped multiple school girls few months back. Furthermore Boko Haram has also threatened to March 28 elections. Thus the elected leader would have to focus on strengthening military to counter the threat of Boko Haram. This could be the only way to make Nigeria prosperous and peaceful.
