German authorities are conducting an investigation into some 300 people who may be linked with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group, Welt am Sonntag reported Sunday, citing German Minister of Justice Heiko Maas.
“Germany’s attorney general and prosecutors of federal states are currently carrying out a probe into about 300 accused of having links with the IS(IS),” the minister was quoted as saying by the newspaper, RIA Novosti reported.
The Finnish government also declared that those returning to Finland suspected of having fought in conflict zones would be the subject of a criminal investigation on their return.
Last week, head of Germany’s domestic security agency Hans-Georg Maassen told Welt am Sonntag that at least 60 German citizens died while fighting for the ISIS, adding that approximately 550 German nationals have recently left for Iraq and Syria to join the armed conflict.
According to UN October estimates, some 15,000 foreign fighters from 80 countries have entered Syria and Iraq to join the ISIS or other extremist groups since the Syrian conflict broke out in 2011.
The ISIS Takfiri terrorists currently control parts of Syria and Iraq. They have threatened all communities, including Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians, Ezadi Kurds and others, as they continue their atrocities in Iraq.
Senior Iraqi officials have blamed Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and some Persian Gulf Arab states for the growing terrorism in their country.
The ISIS has links with Saudi intelligence and is believed to be indirectly supported by the Israeli regime.
