Pakistan has witnessed a steep rise in abduction and rape crimes in the last five years.
According to a report since 2008 the police had registered some 10,703 cases of rape across the country. Though the annual number of women raped in Pakistan is far greater than the statistics given in different survey reports by various organizations, the settings in which these rapes have started taking place is frightening. The old notion that perpetrators are only found in certain sections of society and that they are far away from our day to day lives, no longer holds true. It seems as if they are everywhere, plotting to get their target, as and when they wish. The cases of rape are increasing day by day and no part of the county is safe from rapists. However, Punjab is believed to be the worst effected province since most of the rape cases are registered in Punjab. Minor children are not only raped but their videos made and shared with the world. No doubt, places like schools, hospitals and streets and even mosques are all unsafe for the children of Pakistan.
The most shocking thing is that in 20 percent of these cases, Police officials have been involved as well. In 2005 a woman from KP claimed that she was gang raped by four police officers for refusing to pay them money so her husband would be released from prison. Women are therefore safe nowhere. Whether in police station, hospital wards or girls’ colleges, there are abductions or gang-rapes in the name of ‘honour.’ It is a wild, wild world out there, pregnant with silence and dampened with indifference. It seems that Islamic republic of Pakistan is rapidly becoming “Rapistan”, where rapists are free to commit heinous crime.
