Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has formally launched Apna Rozgar (self-employment) Scheme worth Rs31 billion under which 50,000 vehicles are being provided to the unemployed youth through computerised balloting. Shahbaz Sharif said that under the scheme vehicles were being provided on soft terms and Rs70,000 below the market rate and their markup was also being paid by Punjab government. The Apna Rozgar Scheme will not only result in generation of number of new job opportunities but also target of economic development will be achieved. The programme will help unemployed people particularly youths to earn an honourable living for their families. What is more encouraging is that the Chief Minister has assured that it will be implemented in atransparent manner. This scheme coupled with similar other initiatives by Shahbaz Sharif for encouragement of youths will go a long way to bring prosperity and social harmony. In fact the Chief Minister is burning his mid night oil to bring improvement with new ideas keeping in view the shortcomings in different areas. However in our view, in addition to these laudable initiatives, the Chief Minister should launch another Youth specific Mega project of setting up small industrial estates in every big town where hi-tech industries are set up and educated youths particularly having degrees in engineering could be absorbed. Shahbaz Sharif has the capacity to do something bigger than such short term policies or more rightly myopia. By such schemes we can reduce the unemployment but cannot produce the professionals. CM needs to focus on professional based projects that have longer use both for the youth and the country.
