The mayhem which occurred at CAA administered Karachi Airport, exposed security lapses because area around periphery of this sensitive zone is in occupied by land mafia and now it has become a sanctuary for criminals and extremists who subject this city and its sensitive installations to frequent terrorist attacks. There are over 4,000 ghost employees within CAA, involved in nefarious criminal activities. Over the years CAA’s regulatory functions have deteriorated, and it has become an organization hostage to political cronies, nepotism and mediocrity.
Imposition of sanctions by European Union on PIA, an airline regulated by CAA, was the consequence of failure of its regulatory functions and so are unresolved numerous fatal air crashes. Pakistan’s aviation industry has suffered a lot, because of politicization of CAA and its failure to perform its regulatory duty, free from threats, intimidation and culture of corruption and mediocrity which dominates its corridors.
As it is, Karachi’s infrastructure has collapsed, its population expanding, with criminal economy posing a threat to lives of peaceful citizens. It is time that few Federal State Corporations, with thousands of employees from upcountry are relocated to Islamabad, so as to provide some breathing space to this already over congested city, where even basic necessity of water has become a rare commodity and half the city is shut down by frequent calls for strikes, in this endless battle of turf that has consumed thousands of lives.
