The poor policies of democratic governments has forced people to think that Generals have solutions to our problems even two military governments and two army governments failed earlier. Ayub Khan’s rule was though considered as the best yet it could not be compared with the democratic era of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, while the Ayub’s successor General Zia ul Haq wreaked havoc on the country and Pakistan is still reaping the fruit of his policies. When it comes to Musharraf era, it is also considered as the best era yet it has its own flaws. Yet they all failed because they were bereft of ideological moorings and tried to become exactly what they had come to mend, politicians with the label of ‘democrats’ while still perpetuating their rule. Will the army be able to deliver us from our precipitous terminal decline this time or push us further towards the abyss? A coup might still come to pass when there is total political and economic failure that we are fast approaching and there is no other option left but to save the country for a time at least, because those who have taken oath to do so will be forced to do it, if nothing else for appearances sake that they were faithful to their pledge.
But for this Pakistan army will have to shun the old bad ways that is amalgamation of national and personal vested interests would have to shun. It would have to abandon the concept of bloody civilians and will have to work with blood civilians without any sense of superiority. The army should learn from those civilians who know what generals don’t know. If army continues to take over and continues to consider it superior it would certainly be going to embark on another destructive mode. In the current situation if we observe the incumbent Chief of Army staff is doing what he deems best without any political and foreign expert’s consultation that is without discussing issues with bloody civilians.
