Sex abuse, child molestation and Sexual harassment and rape are rampant in Pakistan. There were several hearth wrenching incidents in which number of innocent child has been molested. Few days back news was published about a 14 years old boy was found dead in a factory located in Shahdara. The victim, Salman Shah was strangled after being molested. The stories of sexual abuse, especially involving young boys, appear too often now, but the culprits are never brought to justice.
Most of the children are molested by the school teachers, relatives and their religious teachers but no bar has been placed by the government to control this crime.
In January, a five year old boy, was found murdered in a mosque, after being molested, the police arrested a barber but he was shot in a so called encounter just days after he confessed to killing.
It is a taboo subject in Pakistan but child molestation is quite common in our society, particularly in families where the parents or guardians are either unaware of the danger or are too unsuspecting of relatives, friends, servants and tutors. Among the last group, the religious teacher, who is considered too pious to do anything of the kind, is the most to be feared as the youngest children are put under his care to learn the Quran. The paedophile dons many garbs but the holy mantle is the most handy in this perversion. With increasing stress on religious education under the growing influence of TV evangelists and parents having no time to take upon themselves this responsibility, young defenceless kids are being sent to madrassas or maulvis being hired to provide home tuition to boys and girls at home.. It is duty of the media to come forward and run a campaign against this heinous crime. Parents should know if their child is being harassed, and how to handle the situation. In order to control this crime, Government should focus on sex education, though in Pakistan society it is considered as a taboo, yet it should be made a part of syllabus so that crimes against children could be controlled.
