After the BJP led government, the extremist Hindu organizations have made life of minorities miserable. Few days back a Christian nun has been raped. Christians continue their protests over gang-rape of elderly nun; and head of India’s Catholic bishops said “India should be as concerned about its people, as it is about its cows – a sacred animal in Hinduism. Unarguably, he was referring to the parliament of Haryana state, which passed a law on Tuesday banning the slaughter of cows and sale of beef. It imposes both a fine up to 100,000 rupees (over $1,500) and an imprisonment term ranging from three years to 10 years for killing the sacred animal. Anyhow, the hate campaign unleashed by the fundamentalist forces is keeping the minority wholly preoccupied with defending their basic human rights and cultural identity. Organized incidents of crimes against Christian minority and phenomenal rise in Hindu fanaticism are reflective of BJP leadership’s mindset.
Indian government under the BJP uses Indian RAW and other intelligence agencies to advance its pernicious agenda. There are reports that India was behind the recent attack on two churches in Lahore, and especially its agents infuriated the mob to lynch two innocent people, which was done to divert the attention of international community from gang-rape of the nun. Minorities are groaning under repression by the brute Hindu majority and law enforcing departments in India. Muslims, Christians and Dalits are being subjected to inhuman treatment, and are not allowed to lead their lives according to their beliefs, traditions and culture. Apart from killings in Kashmir, efforts are being made to change demography in Kashmir and Assam. This is happening in India, which claims to be a secular state; but nowhere in the world has secularism been so blatantly betrayed.
India’s Constitution has the provisions for safeguarding the rights of minorities, but Hindu majority led by BJP has shown utter disregard to it and has been committing atrocities on minorities with impunity. Last year, Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission Testimony by Human Rights Watch was presented before US Senate Committee on atrocious attitude of Hindu majority, which highlighted the plight of minorities in India. The report was presented before Indian general elections 2014. Some of the fanatic groups are not in favour of a separate and distinct culture for minorities. A Hindu fanatic namely Professor Balraj Madhok had suggested that the minorities must adopt Indian (Hindu) names. Schools and other educational institutions are being systematically Hinduized. References to Hindu gods and goddesses abound in the text books. Hindu fundamentalism is increasingly its influence everywhere and in every sector of the Indian society including bureaucracy, media and educational institutions.
