About 3,500 personnel of the Punjab police were sent back to their areas from the federal capital in the wake of the devastating floods in different parts of the province.
The decision was taken on the request of the inspector general of the police Punjab.
About 11,827 personnel of the Punjab police from different districts had been called to Islamabad during the ongoing sit-ins.
On Saturday morning, the Central Police Office Islamabad received a letter from the IGP Punjab, Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera, demanding that all the personnel should be sent back as they were needed in the flood-affected areas of the province.
According to officials in the capital police, “There is shortage of manpower in the districts due to which the rescue works was badly affected there.”
An official said there was an emergency situation in the Punjab but keeping in view the situation in Islamabad the capital police could not send back all the police personnel.
However, 3,500 personnel from Gujranwala and Chiniot districts were sent back as the situation there was alarming, he said.
The official said IGP Islamabad Tahir Alam Khan had requested the interior ministry to inform the home department of Punjab that it was difficult to send back the entire contingent of the Punjab police. The personnel of the districts affected by the floods may be sent back in exchange for a same number of policemen from other districts of Punjab.
Overall, 13,784 security personnel – 11,827 from the Punjab police, 1,015 from AJK police and 942 railways police – are stationed in the capital along with 6,063 personnel of the capital police, 3,000 personnel of Frontier Constabulary and 225 Rangers.
