SHAFAQNA PAKISTAN (Shia News Agency)
Pakistan adds two million motorbikes to its domestic market each year. Suppose this trend continues, we will reach the number of 50 million bikes in Pakistan soon. What will be the fuel costs and how much pollution will they emit? Already, motorbikes are present in large numbers on the roads in our big cities. In Lahore, roads are choked with traffic due to the presence of hundreds of bikes and cars. I have a suggestion that instead of using motorbikes, we should promote bicycles. It will help improve commuters’ health and bring a lot of improvement in the form of stouter, sturdier legs, reduce risk of cardiovascular diseases and result in a cleaner environment for our population. Bicycles are wonderfully cheap machines and highly useful, especially where commuting distances are not too long. Due to slow speed, bicycles usually cause fewer accidents than motorbikes.
In London, the government has allocated one promenade for exclusive use of cyclists. In Doha, the Qatar government lends a bicycle to anyone who wants to ride it. Ching Chi is an improvised motorbike with single front wheel, poor road grip and no rear wheel brakes and it is always prone to crashes. So there is no wonder that these Ching Chis have caused a lot of fatal accidents. In the absence of a suspension system, a Ching Chi offers a very bumpy ride indeed. A mass transit and efficient public transport system are the only viable solution to end our traffic-related problems.
