India has been on high alert after swine flu cases emerged in different states. If the swine flu had hit India in as early as December 2014, why were we sleeping even after passing of four months to air our concerns that are a million dollars question? It is humbly requested that Pakistan should place her health ministry at a high alert and build firewalls within Pakistan to avoid a catastrophe in the making. Some recommendation include, border control, scanning of people coming from India, building stocks of required vaccines, identifying the vulnerable groups(children and elderly) and public awareness programs.
The issue should also be given enough space in print and electronic media and the areas adjoining Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan (South Punjab and Sindh) should be immediately supported by required health facilities and logistics. The cost of swine flu epidemic in India has already adversely affected her tourism and health sectors with future projections running into loss of billions of US dollars in revenues. Pakistan cannot afford such epidemic at this time as its human and economic cost could become unbearable for our fledgling economy and badly tarnish our image abroad, already reeling under the infamous polio syndrome.
