Former teachers of Pak-Turk schools have expressed serious concern over the recent kidnapping of their colleague from Lahore, demanding that the Turkish family be recovered immediately.

Speaking at a press conference, educationists Osman and Navida Arslanhan said that the Turkish staff running the Pak-Turk institutions had been living in Pakistan under the UNHCR’s protection as asylum seekers since November 2016.

They said that the abduction of the Turkish educationist along with his family was a very serious matter and the situation had created unrest among the Turkish staff who were not teaching anymore since the Turkish government registered cases against them.

The Pak-Turk school network came under a cloud in the aftermath of the failed coup in Turkey last year which was blamed on Fethullah Gulen and led to a crackdown on his followers in Turkey.

In November last year, the Pakistani authorities directed the Turkish staff of the Pak-Turk schools to leave the country, implying they had links with Mr Gulen.

Their apparent disappearance reflects the sort of high-handedness that Pakistanis who rub the authorities the wrong way have become familiar with.

Even though it is difficult to speculate whether the Turkish government has anything to do with the events on Wednesday, what has happened is clearly beyond the pale.

The family has reasonable expectation that the country that has given them refuge would not imperil their safety at the behest of a foreign nation, even a friendly one.

Their recovery is of paramount importance, and the sooner we get to the truth the better it would be for everyone’s reputation in the host country.
