Where police has been notorious for not only supporting several crimes but also committing number of them, these days it has also started killing people in the name of encounter. A security guard, who murdered his employer because of delay in payment of salary, was killed in Lahore during exchange of fire with police. The incident of killing of the employer had created panic in the area with demands for bringing the culprit to book. It is tragic that the killer committed a serious crime and had mustered courage to fire upon the police party and as a result got killed. This is not just one incident of the kind as there are frequent reports of criminals killed during police encounters in Punjab and other parts of the country. The rising number of such incidents is reflection of growing crime rate and dare devilbehaviour of criminals who confront police frequently. Regrettably, the Government and the agencies concerned are only focusing on terrorism these days and as a result street and other crimes are on the rise. The incidents of snatching of cars,bikes, mobile phones and purses are almost daily reported by media but there is no effective response to the situation. In some cases, the victims are shot dead when they try to resist. The fundamental duty of the Government is protection of life and property of the citizens but they have been left to the mercy of the deteriorating situation. It is because of criminal negligence of police and ineffective judicial system that people resort to mob justice. The Federal and Provincial Governments, police heads and Chief Justices of the Supreme and High Courts must ponder over the situation and join their heads to tackle growing incidence of street crimes.
