There were apprehensions that sooner or later the law enforcing agencies will have to carry out operation in and around Nine-Zero, the headquarters of the MQM in Karachi and the inevitable happened in wee hours of Wednesday. A spokesman of the Rangers, which conducted the raid, claimed arrest of high profile convicted criminals and recovery of arms and ammunition including weapons and military gears used by NATO forces. NO one would object to raids, arrests of criminals and recovery of illegal arms and ammunition as much-needed peace and security has to be restored at all costs to cure bleeding wounds of the country. Therefore, while Rangers have taken the daring step, we would urge that similar action be initiated against all other hide-outs in Karachi as well as any other place of Pakistan. There must be a clear message that the operation is even-handed and not targeted against any particular party, group or gang. Criminals should be treated as criminals irrespective of their political affiliation and influence. It is an open secret that different political parties have their armed and militant wings that are freely operating and are used against political opponents or to pressurize the government on particular issues. Many a criminals have taken refuge in different politicalparties, some have even made their way to police and others are becoming threat to peace at campuses of the educational institutions. There are also allegations that Sindh’s ruling PPP is supporting criminals and gangsters and is advancing its political interests through criminal activities by these elements. There have been popular demands that the political parties should disband their armed wings and disassociate themselves from criminals but so far they have not paid any heed to these calls. It is, therefore, time to launch an even-handed operation against all criminals in every nook and corner of the country. We have wasted much time due to political considerations and as a result the country has suffered a lot. It is on record that lists of criminals and their harbours were prepared time and again by relevant agencies but action was withheld because of different expediencies. It is in the interest of political parties as well as the State of Pakistan to weed out crime and criminals and everyone of us should extend a helping hand for the purpose.
