The frequency of rape has been rapidly increasing in India. The hatred among masses against the rapist is also increasing day by day. On March 5, a charged mob of student protestors, infuriated at the multiple rape of a female college student, stormed Dimapur central jail in Nagaland, dragged out the rape accused, beat him up, stripped him naked and strung him up at the Dimapur clock tower. It did not take him long to die, but what actually died that day was law, order and civility. Anger over rape is understandable and hard to get over. In India, this anger can be multiplied a hundred times over: reports suggest there is a rape every 30 minutes in the country, with Delhi by now being known as the rape capital of the world. However, what cannot be condoned, no matter how disgraceful rape may be, are public lynchings in which the mob, fuelled by hate, revenge and adrenaline, takes the law into its own hands and kills, overriding the criminal justice system. In this way, there will only be anarchy. Rape is condemnable and a very grave offence for which there should be the harshest punishment, but what has transpired in the town of Dimapur is deplorable. India will never be the same again after the vicious gang rape and murder of a young woman on a bus in Delhi in December 2012. The crime was so horrible and the butchery meted out to that poor woman for daring to be a woman out late at night so savage that the whole of India stood up in protest. There were calls for the death penalty, no mercy, and for attitudes to change concerning women. This sentiment was strong and it was the beginning of a new page in rape perceptions. However, with the Dimapur lynching case, it seems these sentiments are going too far. There is, of late, a certain climate and rage surrounding rape.
The public sentiments against rape are quite high and people are much charged against this heinous crime. If BJP led government does not take necessary measurements and bring vital legislation to stop this crime, these public sentiments would turn into an unstoppable volcano that would rattle the Indian government.
