Manipulation of curriculum is not something new in Pakistan. Pakistan minorities has been complaining since long that they are forced to Islamiat but Government paid no heed however after a deep slumber finally Pakistan one of the province awake from deep slumber. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board has begun developing books on Ethics as an alternative subject to Islamiat for non-Muslim schoolchildren in the province. Currently, Islamiat is not compulsory for non-Muslim students at schools. They can opt for Ethics subject in place of Islamiat. Sources in the KPTB said the study material on Ethics for fourth-12th grades had been prepared in light of the latest curriculum and that its review would begin soon.
Non-Muslim students in government-run schools in Pakistan struggle with studying ‘Islamiyat’ as they are unfamiliar with reading and writing Arabic. But lack of alternatives and facilities means they don’t have a choice and are forced to continue in these schools. This affects the lives of thousands of Hindu and Christian students who have no option but Islamic studies in state-run educational institutions. Though almost all Pakistan’s 145 million citizens are Muslims, there are a small but significant percentage of minorities as well — 1.5 percent are Christians and 1.5 percent are Ahmadis/Qadianis, Hindus, Zikris, followers of other faiths, or persons of no organised religion. It is positive step that finally KPK has taken a positive step to the oppressed minorities.
