Pakistan’s jail system is well known for its corrupt ways. Most of the political and notorious criminals are treated with respect and all the luxuries inside jail. Most of the criminals with strong resources even do not want to get released for they do not want to miss the luxurious life of Jails. Same is the case with Zaki ur Rehman Lakhvi, the accused of Mumbai attack. According to tribune “As the case for the suspension of his detention order is being fought in courts, the alleged mastermind of 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi lives a life of ‘luxury’ in Adiala jail, Rawalpindi.” With lax laws for the suspect in place, Lakhvi and his six comrades have several rooms at their disposal next to the jailer’s office, BBC reported. Lakhvi thought life outside the jail would have improved for better but was shocked to see inflation and poverty levels at all time high.
The LeT commander, accused of planning, financing and executing the attacks on Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai, was arrested four days after Indian officials named him as one of the major suspects in the case. At least 160 people were killed in the attacks on two hotels, a train station, a hospital, a Jewish cultural centre and other targets.
The treatment of Jail officials with Lakhvi shows that Pakistan Government did not shun its old bad ways of supporting terrorists. On one hand Pakistan Military is pressing hard against militants while Civilian Government is not ready to delink itself from terrorists. This shows the seriousness of political leadership to eradicate terrorism. The statements of PM are mere lip service and fool the nation.
