The ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arbaia are an open secret. It would not be wrong to say that Saudia plays a pivotal role in Pakistan’s politics. It would not wrong to say that Nawaz Shrif is Saudia’s man in Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif had close ties with King Abdullah but after his departure, Nawaz Sharif has sworn in allegiance to King Abdul Aziz for he thinks that Saudis are goddote and Saudis are key motors behind Pakistan’s functioning. “Coming in the backdrop of anger in Saudi Arabia over its criticism in Pakistan, the surprise ‘invitation’ for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from Riyadh has left many wondering about the agenda of the trip” reported Dawn. The newly crowned King of Saudi Arabia, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, has sent a special invitation to the Prime Minister to visit the Kingdom in the first week of March.
It seems that there is upheaval in Saudia after Pakistan’s intelligence pointed fingers towards Saudia for funding terrorist Madrassas and this is the very reason behind this invitation. Thus there is a certain tension going on between Kingdom and Islamabad. Some claim that the delay in the arrival of Abdullah Zahrani, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador-designate to Pakistan, was also because of the underlying tensions in the relationship.
Now the Mian Nawaz Sharif has been in fix. On one side he is definitely going to be snubbed by his Saudi masters while on the other hand COAS Raheel Sharif is definitely not going to spare Saudi funded Madrassas involved in terrorism. Nawaz Sharif is indeed in a catch 22 position.
