SHAFAQNA PAKISTAN (Shia News Agency)
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif reached London on the invitation of Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron. The purpose of this visit remained a mystery as neither the two countries signed a deal nor it has some specific agenda. His tour aimed to attend the 100 years of the Gallipoli battle. The Gallipoli battle was fought from April 1915 to January 1916. It was a campaign of World War I that took place on the Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in modern Turkey) in the Ottoman Empire. The peninsula forms the northern bank of theDardanelles, a strait that provided a sea route to the Russian Empire, one of the Allied powers during the war. Intending to secure it, Russia’s allies Britain and France launched a naval attack followed by an amphibious landing on the peninsula, with the aim of capturing the Ottoman capital of Constantinople (modern Istanbul. The naval attack was repelled and after eight months’ fighting, with many casualties on both sides, the land campaign was abandoned and the invasion force was withdrawn to Egypt.
Apart from this there was nothing specific accept assurance on both parts to assist each other on different front including terrorism. No doubt, the UK’s assistance and cooperation in the areas of security and counterterrorism are necessary, but the premier should have focused on more urgent needs of the country that can be discussed and finalised during such meetings.
However this visit was diplomatically a mistake as the celebrations of end of Ottoman empire is certainly a thing not pleasant for Turkey and Pakistan counts Turkey as a close friend. Apart from this it was burden on public exchequers. Being a Premier of a poor country Nawaz Should cut his visits that are expanding with passage of time. Also Pakistan is at cross roads and it is time to focus on country affairs rather than wasting time on such visits.
