India has sought the United Nations’ intervention over the issue of LeT commander Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi’s release from jail. But is it a sound move by India considering the fact that India has for decades consistently opposed involvement of non-regional powers and intervention of ‘third parties’ in its bilateral dispute with Pakistan? An even larger question is this: hasn’t the Modi government with this move reversed India’s Pakistan policy as far as the issue of third parties’ involvement in India-Pakistan dispute is concerned? India always opposed third party’s interventions in bilateral disputes including Kashmir. Another bigger question is that why India is taking case to same organization whose resolution it refused to accept on Kashmir issue? Infact UN should have barred India to seek its help after her refusal to accept UN resolution on Kashmir. However, Lakhvi’s bail also leave several question marks on Pakistan’s counter terrorism efforts. Despite reaching a consensus on indiscriminate action against all militant groups and their members, the government procrastinated and delayed the trial of this particular case, apparently at the behest of some hidden hand. Both the Indian and Pakistani governments remained engaged in a series of allegations and counter-allegations over the release of Lakhvi. Our foreign office blamed India for Lakhvi’s release on the grounds that Pakistan was not given access to main accused Ajmal Kasab and not provided with substantial evidence. However, this does not absolve the government of its responsibility for bringing the Mumbai attacks culprits to justice.

Infact Pakistan government did not prepare the strong case against Lakhvi and left number of loopholes in the case. The question is does Pakistan treading on the same path of strategic assets? If Pakistan thinks so it is indeed a false assumption and it has witnessed that these chickens finally come home to roost. Pakistan should reconsider its approach about hard core terrorists like Lakhvi.
