After attack on army public school, Government is emphasizing on the security of school. Several security measures have been taken by the schools on the directions of the Government. Apart from security measures government has kicked off a campaign of teachers training to combat any terror attack. In Punjab, the police and the Bomb Disposal Squad have visited schools in Multan and other areas teaching young boys and girls how to handle firearms, detect explosive devices, evacuate a building or care for the injured. This follows measures in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to train teachers in the use of guns and grant licences to those who choose to bring them to classrooms.
While the police say the measure is aimed at enabling children and their teachers to ward off militants until help can arrive, there is something inherently wrong with placing weapons in the hands of children. These children should be able to focus on their lessons and other school activities without bearing the burden of providing security to themselves. Now the question is that whether teacher’s responsibility is to teach or protect the school? The responsibility of the security lies on the shoulders of Law enforcement agencies and If they cannot protect the citizens, why they are receiving heavy amounts in the name of salaries and security. State cannot abdicate its responsibility by just providing training to the teachers. Teachers are already burdened by number of other hectic tasks, like polio duties, election duties, census duties and several other. Thus security is state function and it should fulfill its responsibility.
