From the outset, Pakistan witnessed concentration of power in the hands of those who governed her, whether they belonged to the political class or the khakis. The treatment meted out to the motherland was no different. And this, as a consequence, led to the destruction of democratic values and principles. The VIP culture in essence is demeaning. It negates the idea of equality. There are several cases in which ministers, their siblings or their servants violated the law and even beaten up number of low class citizens, whether they were working on a shop or performing their duty as police or traffic constable. It is not long ago when CM Shahbaz’s daughter tortured a poor backery worker. In a similar case a PIA flight was delayed for several hours due to Rehman Malik and PML-N MNA Ramesh Kumar Vankwan. While today “A case was registered against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz MNA Sheikh Rohail Asghar’s son for allegedly beating up a security guard in Lahore and threatening to kill him, Express News reported today.”
Pakistan needs to roll back this VIP culture that is eroding the very basics of democracy and constitution which cite that all the citizens are equal before the law. If VIP culture is not controlled, a time will come when people will lose their patience and VIP’s will find no place to hide.
