Horse trading in Senate election is hallmark of Pakistan’s culture. The basic qualification to win senate election is either by the dent of money or loyalty to the party leadership. This is the very reason that Pakistan’s senate is mostly filled with incompetent people. However it is welcoming move that PML-N has decided to stop horse trading in senate election this time and for this very purpose Secretary Information Pervez Rasheed has sought help of PTI. “The federal cabinet on Monday expressed serious concerns on reports of alleged horse trading in the upcoming Senate elections. In his remarks, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the PML-N is working for decades to stop horse trading. He directed the federal ministers and leaders of his political party to contact with other parties to stop this practice” Dunya news reported today. The poll should be conducted through secret ballot rather than showing their hands. When the polls will be conducted through ballot, it would reduce the chances of horse trading because every member will be free to poll vote to the candidate of his choice. Furthermore if senate members are chosen from scholars, intelligentsia, students and working class it would be quite helpful to support true democracy.
