Gas cylinder blasts in passenger vans have increased in Pakistan in recent days, raising concern over the poor standard of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) kits. According to dawn “At least 10 persons were burnt alive on Sunday late night when a passenger hi-ace van caught fire, following an explosion in its gas kit at the Karachi-Hyderabad Superhighway”.
Van drivers prefer to fix CNG kits in their vehicles, but due to poorly manufactured equipment and carelessness on the side of drivers, hundreds of people lost their lives during the past few years. According to a report of CSF “As many as 2,000 people died because of CNG cylinder explosions last year, said a Civil Society Front (CSF) report”. Number of people killed in CNG cylinder explosions was four times greater than the number of people who died in US drone strikes in 2011. The government should ensure the abandonment of all unauthorized CNG-kit installing and checking shops, where fake fitness certificates are being issued to consumers.
Government should take strict actions against those CNG stations which do not follow safety rules and those vehicles which do not carry safety certificates should be banned.
