Since the cold war era, Pakistan has been considered Afghanistan as strategic depth. A concept quite confusing. In order to achieve that concept Pakistan not only fanned proxy wars in Afghanistan but also successfully handed over Afghan control in its own trained men, the Taliban. But after 9/11, Pakistan not only lost control over Afghanistan as its policies back fired and not only Afghanistan’s new leadership under Hamid Karzai and Afghan people rejected Pakistan’s polices but it also faced wrath of Afghan people for destroying their country. After Pakistan’s failure, India tried to placate Afghan leadership through heavy investment and massive funding to Afghan government, thus successfully winning the trust of people and government. In order to regain control Pakistan started a proxy war in Afghanistan through its puppet Taliban but was in vain.
After Hamid Karzai’s defeat in 2014 election and Ghani’s arrival Pakistan once again expedited its efforts to appease Afghan leadership. This time Pakistan adopted a round the way strategy. By supporting Afghanistan through disbanding support to its own men and stopping border infiltration, Pakistan regained its place again. Now once again Pakistan planned to revise its plan by bring back their henchmen, the Taliban. Thus Pakistan convinced both the sides to resolve their differences through dialogues. If dialogue between Afghanistan Government and Taliban succeed Pakistan would be once again on driving seat and it would be in a position to win proxy war against India in Afghanistan.
