Madrassaha factor is an important part of Pakistan society especially in FATA and KPK. The most conspicuous aspect of the Madrassahs is that almost all of the leadership of the Taliban and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), including Mullah Omar and Hakeemullah Mehsud, were educated in Pakistani madrassas, most of them linked to Jamia Darul-e-Uloom in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A recent survey reveals that the number of madrassas across Pakistan stands at 28,982. This number stood at 2,861 in 1988 and 246 in 1947. These large number of madrassahs receive massive funding from different countries especially from the Arab funders. According to security analyst Muhammad Amir Rana “Where does this money go? One answer is that these funds are helping the madressah sector ‘encroach’ upon the mainstream or formal education sector. A few religious parties and big madressahs have established what they call ‘modern Islamic schools’. It is not clear if the government conceives the mainstreaming of madressahs in a similar manner”. Most of the madrassahs invest this amount in providing full fledged support to needy students, which in turn are trained and used for Jihadi purposes. Apart from this with this amount madrassahs form a chain and establish seminaries in the areas where they are less in number. A major chunk of this amount is also used on weapons which in turn used by their students in various extremist activities. It is utmost need to channelize and scrutinize this amount to reduce terrorism.
