Where Pakistan does not legislation on many issues, labor laws are another issue that has yet to be addressed, despite following the charter of ILO (International labor organization). Pakistan lacks proper legislation for labor working in different fields of life. Pakistan constitutes one third of its population working as labor. The most unfortunate and poverty struck segment among working class is Coal miners. A major portion of Coal miners work in Balochistan coal mines. These coal miners work under extremely challenging conditions, without any safety measures. These coal miners are the key force behind Punjab industry for the coal extracted from these mines is transported to Punjab to cater industrial demands. Due to poor working conditions number of poor coal miners have lost their lives. Yesterday seven coal miners lost their lives due to suffocation in Duki area of Province. These workers are paid poorly, provided no compulsory safety equipment and that basic health units are either poorly equipped or do not exist at all in close proximity to mining sites? While we aspire to bring awareness to world on the issue of reckless over-exploitation of natural resources, it would appear that we are failing to appeal to the conscience of those who exploit human beings for business.
In Pakistan, use of labour is synonymous with exploitation of labour. People are desperate. They need work even if it threatens to kill them. Government should realize that working class the key behind economy. It should focus to alleviate the sufferings of working class and provide standards for safe work.
