Pakistan a country marred with energy shortage have signed a deal with Qatar for importing LNG ( Liquefied National Gas). Previous year Pakistan had decided not to buy LNG from Qatar because of its high rates. Pakistan is aiming to import up to three million tonnes of LNG per year, most of which is expected to come from Qatar once the deal is finalised. This is expenditure of $1.5bn annually, or $22.5bn over 15 years. Out biggest deal yet. The upshot is that we may not have to rely on furnace oil, which is expensive, and often in short supply. The import of LNG will enable Pakistan to produce between seven and nine per cent more power, while the import is expected to yield cost savings worth an annual $300mn.
Though Pakistani government seems quite ready to import LNG from Qatar but one cannot trust in it as it still could not work out on Iran Pakistan peace pipeline, which if completed, Pakistan’s energy wows will be over forever. The other important thing is that rather than paying huge amount to Qatar, why Government did not invest same amount on revamping old , poor infrastructure and building in more dams. Importing LNG is similar as Pakistan purchase electricity from IPPs.
