Pakistan and India are two crucial neighbors that are always uneasy with each other. Under the pressure of international powers both the countries carry dialogue on and off. When the Narendra Modi assumed office, Pakistan Prime Minister visited India and congratulated Modi. This goodwill gesture brought hope that both the countries will continued dialogue to ease the tension but what happened was quite contrary to the speculations. The meeting of Pakistan High commissioner to India Abdul Baist became a bone of contention and India announced to call off dialogue process. BJP government, cancelled the scheduled foreign secretaries’ meeting, protesting against our High Commissioner in India, Abdul Basit, who was meeting the Hurriyat leadership in the meanwhile. Mr Modi perhaps was at that time more interested in the upcoming elections in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) and perhaps for the benefit of Jammu voters, had wanted to reinforce his image of being a person capable of putting Pakistan in its place. After this development the ties between both the countries once again become strenuous with constant border skirmishes.
However after Obama’s visit to India, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned PM Nawaz Sharif and offered him good luck in World cup match with good news resuming secretary level talks. It is time that both the countries should learn to co-exist for the betterment of their people. Narendra Modi should soften his hard liner image if he wants to attract the world to India. Not only US but several other countries have demanded of India to show religious tolerance after a campaign of force conversions. Narendra Modi should convince his party stakeholders that dialogue is only process to bring peace and stability in this region.
