Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Prime Minister Imran Khan have expressed deep sorrow over the Sheikhupura train accident.

According to Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR), Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has saddened over the loss of precious lives in a tragic train accident near Sheikhupura.

Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa said that he expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed deep sorrow over the Sheikhupura train accident on micro-blogging website, Twitter and said, “Deeply saddened at the accident this afternoon at a railway crossing near Sheikhupura which resulted in the death of at least 20 people, mainly Sikh pilgrims returning from Nankana Sahib. Have directed that proper medical care be provided to the injured.”

He further wrote, “My condolences and prayers go to the families of the deceased. Have directed relevant authorities to ensure facilitation and care for all the families. Our entire railway’s operational safety SOPs will be reviewed immediately.”Note that, at least 19 people have been killed as a train struck a passenger van at an unmanned railway crossing near Sheikhpura.

According to the District Police Officer Sheikhupura Ghazi Salahuddin, 15 pilgrims lost their lives as the Lahore-bound train from Karachi met with an accident near Farooqabad railway station.

According to railway officials, the accident took place at a train crossing without a barrier. All the wounded have been shifted to a nearby hospital, added officials.

All the bodies have been shifted to the hospital and rescue operation has been completed. The wounded were given first aid by locals at the time of the accident.

Railways authorities have cleared the track and train operation has resumed.
