Members of the United States Congress have penned an open letter to President Joe Biden, urging him to acknowledge Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its leader, General Mohamed Hamdan ‘Hemedti’ Dagalo, as human rights violators.
Dated Friday, April 19, 2024, the letter coincides with the one-year mark of the conflict in Sudan, pitting the RSF against the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) following a coup in 2021.
Referencing the USA’s Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, the lawmakers advocate for sanctions against the RSF and Hemedti. They highlight the alleged involvement of these entities in “gross violations of internationally recognized human rights,” particularly targeting human rights defenders and individuals exposing illicit activities by government officials.
