Imran Khan transferred to Shifa International Hospital as security tightened

Shafaqna Pakistan: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan was transferred from Adiala Jail to Islamabad’s Shifa International Hospital in the early hours of Friday for medical treatment, in compliance with a Supreme Court directive.

A convoy carrying Imran left Adiala Jail shortly after midnight under heightened security. A heavy contingent of police and security personnel was deployed outside Shifa International Hospital as the deadline set by the Supreme Court for his transfer approached.

The Supreme Court had ordered on Tuesday that Imran be shifted to the hospital for treatment for several days and directed the government to facilitate weekly meetings between him and his family.

The government had challenged the directive through a review petition, describing the Supreme Court’s order as “discriminatory in nature”.

Imran was taken via Chakri to the hospital, where he will be medically examined and treated. The hospital and its surrounding areas were completely surrounded by the police, while several roads leading to the hospital were temporarily closed by installing barbed wire. A heavy police contingent was deployed around the hospital and no unrelated person was allowed to go near it.

The Islamabad police chief and senior personnel were also present outside the hospital ahead of the 12am deadline to inspect the security situation.

Imran’s sister Aleema Khanum also reached Adiala jail before his departure.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said late on Thursday night that Imran’s check-up and treatment would take place soon “in the presence of his family and personal doctors”.

However, he added: “There is no time to rest. This is the first step toward your success. The next phase is certainly tough, but not impossible. We have to secure justice for Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, all leaders, and all workers, and get them released from wrongful imprisonment.”
