Shafaqna Pakistan: Belgium produced a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Senegal 3-2 in a thrilling World Cup round-of-32 clash in Seattle on Wednesday, recovering from a two-goal deficit to secure a place in the last 16.
Senegal dominated the opening stages with a disciplined and well-organised performance, taking the lead in the 24th minute when Habib Diarra finished off a well-worked move.
The African side doubled its advantage early in the second half as Ismaïla Sarr fired home a powerful strike in the 51st minute following another impressive team move, putting Belgium under immense pressure before the European side mounted its dramatic fightback.
The Lions of Teranga controlled the tempo, pressed intelligently, and looked destined for the round of 16 as they kept Belgium at arm’s length throughout the first half. However, the introduction of Romelu Lukaku at half-time proved the turning point.
The Manchester City striker’s movement and physicality immediately troubled the Senegalese defence, while Rudi Garcia’s tactical adjustments gradually shifted momentum.
Thomas Meunier’s introduction at right-back in the 79th minute also proved crucial, providing width and energy that the Belgians had lacked. Lukaku pulled one back in the 86th minute with a tap-in finish, before Youri Tielemans powered home a header from a Meunier cross in the 89th minute to dramatically level the match and force extra time.
From dominating the scoreline, Senegal suddenly found themselves fighting for survival as Belgium’s experience and quality came to the fore.
The first period of extra time remained tense and largely cautious, with both teams understanding the stakes. Senegal pushed for a winner but lacked the cutting edge they had shown in the opening 45 minutes, while Belgium’s fresh legs continued to pose problems. The Senegalese defence appeared increasingly nervous as the match progressed into the second period of extra time.
In the 117th minute, Lamine Camara made a rash challenge on Tielemans in the penalty area. The VAR review confirmed contact, and the referee pointed to the spot: a cruel decision for Senegal after their magnificent first-half performance.
Youri Tielemans stepped up with ice-cold composure and dispatched the penalty into the top corner with clinical precision, sending Belgium into the last 16 with a devastating blow to Senegal’s World Cup dreams. They will take on the winner of tonight’s USA – Bosnia match.
