China opposes US sanctions on Iran

Shafaqna Pakistan: China said US sanctions and economic pressure would not help resolve the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, urging all sides to pursue a political and diplomatic solution.

The remarks came after Washington called on several countries, including China, to support its efforts to put further economic pressure on Iran.

Responding to questions about US President Donald Trump’s threats, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said sanctions and coercive measures would not contribute to resolving the dispute.

Lin urged all parties involved to act responsibly and settle their differences through political and diplomatic channels.

While the United States maintains that its economic campaign will pressure Tehran into changing its course, Iran has denounced the measures as “economic terrorism” and said the strategy will ultimately fail.

When US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was asked whether Washington would pressure Beijing to join the campaign, he told CNBC that it was often better to discuss many issues privately, while urging Beijing to participate in the programme.

In response to Bessent’s remarks, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said China opposed unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law and have not been authorized by the UN Security Council.
